Whats a good pet thats small and easy to care for?

Wambam thankya ma’am asked:

I’m looking for a little companion since I live in apartment on my own. I like rodents and reptiles but I had a hamster once and he didn’t smell too great. I also don’t want a fish because I want a pet that I can handle. Any suggestions will help!

Don’t get a rodent. Get a cat, they are self sufficent. Buy a sweet kitten.. all you need is a litter box, a food bowl and water. You don’t have to walk em’, play with em’ or train em’. Cats are so precious and they can take care of themselves. I would pick a cat over a rat. lol

Rat! I’ve heard nothing but great things about them, and am looking forward to getting one or two of my own when I move to my new apartment.

**And of course cats have to be played with and taken care of. They’re not art pieces that you just set up to lighten a room. That’s a pretty ignorant outlook you’ve got going for that.

Many years ago I used to keep rats as pets, the fancy kind you get in the pet store, not the nasty ones you find in the garbage and stuff… Alot of people say “Ewww, rats!” when I tell them this, but you did say you like rodents. Rats are VERY intelligent, and can become quite fun to have as a little furry companion. Their front paws look just like little human hands. If you keep their cage clean, they don’t stink, really. And if you have no other pets like a cat or dog that could hurt them, then it is OK to let them loose and run around in your room – just make sure you keep an eye on them, as they are good at hiding! Only downside to them is that they dont live too long. The longest I ever had one live was 3 years. But they are very cute and an interesting pet…

In the seventies, there were pet rocks. They demanded no attention, were easy to take with you and you never needed a pet sitter. After that came the chia which does need some care, but not much. Unless you have a good ventilation system, every other pet will add its scent to your place. Probably the least offensive is a lizard of some sort, but I don’t know how much care they require. Good luck.

Cats are the easiest. Ferrets and chinchillas are also good and entertaining but you have to clean out there cage regularly. Sugar gliders are good if you get a socialized one. There are more exotic pets but they are expensive and usually need alot more care and responsibility. Some are Coatimundis, Kinkajous (may have seen paris hilton with one), wallabys, skunks, raccoons. Look at your local laws though because is some states some of these may need permits or be illegal. Good luck.

I would not suggest a bunny, as you are looking for something easy. Bunnies are a little bit of work. I think that a guinea pig would be good. I hear they’re very nice.

Try one of these pets. Here are some from PetFinder:

Sugar Glider -

Guinea Pig -

Turtle -

Gecko -

Hedgehog -

Ferret -

Bunny -

Gerbil -

Snake -

Chinchilla -

I hope this helps! Good luck! Also, do you like birds?

Guinea pigs are so cute and very sweet, and will squeak when you are in the kitchen making noise with plastic bags, they love to eat goodies! IN ORDER TO KEEP The smell down you need to use the right litter too, put about 1/2 inch or so at the bottom of the cage and use country critter litter, it really cuts down the smell along with the bottom of the cage with newspaper. DON’T GIVE broccoli, that causes the urine to smell more.. GOOD LUCK with your search.

Rats are great pets, but you do have to keep the cage clean or it will smell some. Mice are very smelly, worse than rats or hamsters, though they are cute.
Birds don’t smell. I’d recommend a cockatiel or a hand-fed parakeet. Young cockatiels are generally easy to hand-tame even if not hand-fed, but with parakeets it’s best to get one that is already tame; try to handle it before you buy it. If you feel like it you could get a dove of some kind; they are generally very docile. The males coo; I have a female that coos, probably because I don’t keep her with a male. All these birds like company, so if you can’t spend a lot of time with them, it is good to get two. But if you can spend a lot of time with it, your bond with it will be stronger if you have only one bird.
